Armacar Group
The “ARMACAR” Group is an ensemble of five individual companies with much diversified major business interests. The in-depth approach of each company has proven resistence to a fluctuating market viability while systematically strengthening the avenues of profitability.
The history of the “ARMACAR” Group can be traced through a succession of generations, as well as through the sequence of events which left a deep impact on the modes of approach towards any entrepreneurship with its contemporary peers. The past errors cannot be forgotten but can be rectified to march ahead in the aura of security and wisdom accrued through the experiences of the predecessors. It is also the story of a man with little avenues of employment, but with a wish to thrive, embarked in crossing the borders of his environs to gain an entry into a new world, where trade was by choice but his upkeep was a necessity. In his choice or necessity he had to endure trials and tribulations that came on his way of achievement. However his persistence and tenacity against the adversity overcame the hardships to triumph over the malaises thus to enable him to bestow on his future generations a sheltered name for an illustrious tomorrow.
After considering and broaching over the prevailing odds and options, young Luis Francisco Pereira in the early 1800, instead of enlisting to the Goan Diaspora treaded, trudged and sailed through the hills, paddy fields and the rivers from his native village of Socorro to reach Piedade in the island of Divar to set up a modest store to gain the roots of settlement.
Incidentally, the Island of Divar, the ancient “Dipavati” in the annals of the history of Goa, which lies on the opposite site of the fabled “Old Goa” across the river Mandovi, was a favourite haunt of the Portuguese to subsequently host the residences of many a noble families of Goa.
Perchance Luis Francisco by taking up a residence in the Island had a broad spectrum of refulgent prospects, however the untimely circumstances, like pestilences and the making of Panjim as the Capital of Goa, abridged him to pursue the invisible dreams that he had silently nursed and hankered to realize.
With not much of further prospects, he consented his son Joao Caetano to seek a career in the merchant navy instead of minding his store. As a seaman, Joao Caetano while on his jaunts across the seven seas, with a vivid passion for hunting, procured for himself a gun wherein he could indulge in his mania with gusto. On his homecoming, as he was the first individual to obtain a firearm in the Island, the astonished and awed villagers nicknamed him as “Armacar” (Gun holder), which henceforth became the family’s sobriquet.
However, the credit to revolutionize the family’s entrepreneurial concept is attributed to his son Luis Antonio who adhered to his grand father’s epitome of business for a better life.
Luis Antonio Pereira after his stint with the Mercantile Bank in Bombay returned to Goa in 1948 to establish a photo studio with the fascia titled as “Markwell” on the Jose Falcao road at Panjim. Unforeseenly his effort was fleeting as a major fire engulfed the entire edifice wherein his premises were located. Indomitably, being made of sterner essence and willing to cope up with any sort of afflictions, in 1952 he opened up another store on the D Joao de Castro road and bearing in mind the family’s sobriquet, he contentiously named the same as “Loja Armacar”
Taking the clue that some major hardware dealers surrounded him, Luis safely chose to deal with some trivial hardware fixtures and accessories, which he could readily make available to his clientele whom the big stores would neglect otherwise.
With an inner drive to expand, in 1962 Luis “Armacar” registered himself as a Civil Contractor with the government, envisioning massive structural changes and promising prospects.
In 1973 when Luis “Armacar” expired, we his inheritors with the forerunners zeal in enterprise running fierily in our veins launched ” Champs”, a modern sports shop at Panjim. Thus with the launching of “Champs” we constituted the “Armacar Group” building our infrastructural foundation for prosperity.
